A deadlock detection method and computer system for parallel programs. A determination is made that a lock of the parallel programs is no longer used in a running procedure of the parallel programs. A node corresponding to the lock that is no longer used, and edges relating to the lock that is no longer used, are deleted from a lock graph corresponding to the running procedure of the parallel programs in order to acquire an updated lock graph. The lock graph is constructed according to a lock operation of the parallel programs. Deadlock detection is then performed on the updated lock graph.
Computations are performed on shared datasets in a distributed computing cluster using aggressive speculation and a distributed runtime that executes code transactionally. Speculative transactions are conducted with currently available data on the assumption that no dependencies exist that will render the input data invalid. For those specific instances where this assumption is found to be incorrect—that the input data did indeed have a dependency (thereby impacting the correctness of the speculated transaction)—the speculated transaction is aborted and its results (and all transactions that relied on its results) are rolled-back accordingly for re-computation using updated input data. In operation, shared state data is read and written using only the system's data access API which ensures that computations can be rolled-back when conflicts stemming from later-determined dependencies are detected.

The present disclosure involves systems, software, and computer implemented methods for reducing transaction load for process instance completion. One process includes identifying an end event triggered by an initial token of a process instance, determining a type of the end event, performing a search for additional tokens associated with the process instance that are distinct from the initial token, and performing a termination action based on the type of end event and a number of additional tokens identified in the search. The end event type may be non-terminating or terminating, and the end event type can determine the termination action to be performed. If the end event is non-terminating, then the termination action includes joining each finalization action for each process instance variable to a completion transaction if no additional tokens are found and executing the completion transaction to terminate the process instance.
A method and system for supporting Wake-on-LAN technology in a virtualized environment is described. An improved virtual switch comprises a listener, which receives a power-on message on behalf of virtual machines, extracts addresses of the virtual machines to be powered on, which are embedded in the power-on message, compares the extracted addresses with addresses of the virtual machines stored in a database, and selectively powers on those virtual machines for which the extracted and stored addresses match.
The methods and systems described herein provide for granting a virtual machine exclusive access to an optical disc drive responsive to a determination the virtual machine initiated a transaction with the optical disc drive. A drive manager maps an optical disc drive connected to the computing device to a plurality of virtual machines hosted by a hypervisor executed by the computing device. The drive manager intercepts a transaction stream generated by the optical disc drive and converts the transaction stream to a command stream. The drive manager determines, based on an analysis of the command stream, a first virtual machine of the plurality of virtual machines initiated a transaction with the optical disc drive. Responsive to the determination, the drive manager locks the optical disc drive to grant the first virtual machine exclusive access to the optical disc drive.

A wireless device receives a request to originate a data call, e.g., from the user or a higher layer application. If origination control is not to be applied, then the wireless device originates the data call immediately. Otherwise, the origination of the data call is controlled based on prior data call origination attempts that are applicable to the data call. For example, the wireless device may originate the data call immediately if (1) the most recent origination attempt was successful or (2) the most recent origination attempt was unsuccessful but a predetermined time period has elapsed since this unsuccessful origination attempt. If the most recent origination attempt was unsuccessful and the predetermined time period has not elapsed, then the wireless device may (1) wait until this predetermined time period elapses and then originate the data call or (2) reject the data call.

The transmitter characteristics, including location and operating frequency band, are provided to a geo-location database. The database determines the maximum allowable transmission power that meets various specifications for different channels and conveys the power and channel(s) to the transmitter. The database estimates channel incumbent signal strengths based on the transmitter location and primary and higher-priority secondary incumbent systems, estimates the splatter levels, determines whether adjacent and co-channel interference protection ratios are met, and adjusts the allowable power level accordingly. The database also estimates aggregate co- and adjacent channel primary and secondary incumbent system interference levels at the transmitter location and predicts channel quality for each allowable channel. The estimated levels are updated using measurements of actual levels at the transmitter location. The database dynamically allocates channels using the secondary system priorities.

Near field communication (NFC) devices may be required to operate at low power and so process small signals which are more susceptible to corruption by noise. An NFC device 100 is described having an antenna 10 which can be adapted to receive signal from a further NFC device. When a signal is received by the antenna, an input voltage is generated. A variable resistance element 12 is connected in series between the antenna 10 and an amplifier 14, which is adapted to increase the input resistance with increasing input voltage. By increasing the resistance when the input voltage is increased, the current drawn from the coil is reduced. This results in a lower overall power consumption of the device while maintaining reliable performance, because the higher input signal level is less susceptible to corruption by the noise generated by the variable resistance element 12, and the amplifier 14.

In one embodiment, an optical transmission system transmits data using a format according to which a data frame has two or more pilot-symbol blocks, each having a guard interval, and two or more payload-symbol blocks that are concatenated without a guard interval between them. The use of guard intervals in the pilot-symbol blocks helps the synchronization and channel-estimation procedures performed at a receiver of the optical transmission system to be robust in the presence of certain transmission impairments. The absence of guard intervals in the payload-symbol blocks helps to minimize the transmission overhead and thus achieve relatively high payload-data throughput. Pilot-symbol blocks have a structure that enables the receiver to determine channel-response characteristics for each data frame and then apply appropriate channel-response-compensation procedures to signals corresponding to the payload-symbol blocks of the frame to recover, with a relatively low bit-error rate, the data encoded in those signals.

Systems and methods for managing window transparency for a computer display, making windows wholly transparent or semi-transparent, on a window-by-window basis. Window transparency is triggered by monitoring messages exchanged between a program and an operating system, or by a user action. Upon detection of a first message indicating that a window of the display should be transparent, a layered display mode for the window is initiated. Upon detection of a second message indicating that the window should no longer be transparent, the layered display mode for the window is terminated. The layered mode can be controlled by the operating system or by a graphics processor.
A display device changes the gradation of pixels by a write operation of applying a voltage to the pixels a plurality of times. When newly changing the display state of pixels, the display device judges as to whether or not the pixels whose display state are to be changed are in a write operation. The display device starts the writing operation for those of the pixels that are not in a writing operation, and starts a new writing operation for those of the pixels that are in a writing operation, after the ongoing writing operation is completed. If a writing operation for pixels in progress of being updated and pixels with which a writing operation is to be newly started would lead to substantially large power consumption, the start of the writing operation for the pixels with which a writing operation is to be newly started is postponed.
It is expected to increase the size of a display panel and the number of tones to be displayed on the display panel, and it is requested to use a display panel displaying M (M>3) types of colors. This requires a large memory capacity and makes a circuit for performing signal conversion complex due to an increase in the amount of data to be subjected to the signal conversion. An image memory stores image data compressed at a fixed compression rate, and the signal conversion is performed on the compressed image data. This technique reduces a memory capacity and simplifies a signal conversion circuit. The signal conversion makes it possible to improve color reproducibility of an image displayed and the quality of the image due to smoothing of the outline of the image. In the case of a display panel having sub-pixels displaying M types of colors, the signal conversion is performed on a compressed signal for each sub-pixel to improve the quality of an image.

This can be done by maintaining source data for each face of a subdivided surface, where source data indicates an original location on the original object that corresponds to that face and the polygons resulting from the subdividing. The source data can be a link, path, index or label for each face of the subdivision surface, where the source data indicates an original location on the original object that corresponds to that face.

A method of correlating a representation of a body to a three dimensional representation of the body. A representation (such as a two dimensional image) of a body is acquired and a fitness function is generated for it. A two dimensional outline of the three dimensional representation of the body is then generated for a number of sets of three dimensional position and orientation values. These are compared to the fitness function to generate measures of fit for each set of three dimensional position and orientation values. New sets of position and orientation values are then bred using a genetic algorithm or other breeding algorithm. The method is repeated until the measure of fit converges to an acceptable solution. There is also disclosed a system for performing the method.

A method of determining touches from a data set output from a touch screen comprising an array of sensing nodes. The method comprises analyzing the dataset and identifies a node with a maximum signal value among all unassigned nodes, and, if present, assigns that node to a touch. A logical test is applied to each node that is a neighbor to the assigned node to determine if that node should also be assigned to the touch and the logical test is repeatedly applied to the unassigned neighbors of each newly assigned node until there are no more newly assigned nodes, or no more unassigned nodes, thereby assigning a group of nodes to the touch defining its area. This process can be repeated until all of the nodes of a touch panel are assigned to a touch. The method is ideally suited to implementation on a microcontroller.
